It’s interesting to see the way companies are using social networking services to build communities around their products. I was a bit surprised, however, to see the Central Intelligence Agency has a strong presence on Facebook, with a sponsored group, a short recruitment video (embedded from YouTube), and over 2,700 members.
When I was in high school, military recruiters would set up an information table in the large commons area where kids would hang out between classes and after lunch. Inevitably they’d get plenty of foot traffic. The CIA has simply set up its table in a “virtual commons” where college students are likely to spend time online. It makes perfect sense for them to be there, and I imagine we’ll continue to see similar recruitment attempts from both government and private entities alike.
