Improving interactions at social functions

There are certain social functions, like large conferences, for example, that can feel a little overwhelming for those of us who have a tendency to be a bit shy. While I truly enjoy meeting and connecting with new people, it can be tough to "break the ice" and begin a conversation with a stranger or someone you’ve just met.

Chris Brogan at lifehack.org has some good suggestions about how to approach people in situations like these, and how to quickly get the conversation rolling. I like the idea of asking a question that’s "unique but not TOO far out there" as Chris says, rather than the typical questions most people ask and hear. I’ll be sure to remember these tips the next time I have the opportunity to use them.
