No organization or industry likes to have public sentiment turn against them. On rare occasions, however, bad PR won’t make a difference in said industry’s or organization’s success. For example, the oil industry has had to defend its record setting profits last quarter in light of appearing greedy and opportunistic. I don’t think the public has ever been more frustrated with big oil.
Will the industry be affected by that frustration? It’s doubtful. The product they provide will always be in such high demand that no amount of bad feeling surrounding that product or the companies that deliver it will matter. The story would be different if a viable competitor to oil, such as hydrogen, existed on the market. Since oil’s the only game in town, however, people will continue to gripe about the industry while they fill their tanks.
