Multiple Versions of Windows is Confusing

Word on the street is Microsoft will be releasing at least seven versions of it’s upcoming operating system, Windows Vista. I’ve seen the screenshots, and it looks pretty, but I have to doubt the wisdom in releasing so many versions of a single operating system at one time. Do customers need seven different versions of the same operating system, each with (from what I gather) incrimental improvements and a slightly higher price over the last?

If I want to upgrade my computer from XP to Vista, I’ll have to do serious research to see which version has all of the features I want and need. On the other hand, if I owned a Mac, I could go and buy the latest version of the OS without worrying whether I’m missing out on valuable features. Simple and easy.

Choice is good, but only to a certain point. Choosing between "A" and "B" is beneficial to the customer, but choosing between "A" through "G" is simply too much work- Personally, I’d rather stick with what I’ve got and not have to worry about it. Making a purchase difficult for a consumer is bad business. Microsoft needs to simplify.

EDIT: Upon re-reading, I don’t think I was very clear with this post. Multiple products and the choice they provide is great for consumers. However, I feel that multiple versions of one product is confusing.
