The first experience I had with widgets (small programs that
run on your desktop) was with Apple’s Dashboard (Included with OSX Tiger), and
I absolutely fell in love with the idea. I like information at my fingertips,
and widgets do that well, displaying traffic conditions, weather, stock
information, and so on. There are also small games and other small utilities
available in widget-form.
I’ve been aware of Konfabulator for a while, now, which is
the original widget program and runs on both PCs and Macs. I’d been seriously
thinking about shelling out the $20 to purchase Konfabulator when I received
the excellent news yesterday that Yahoo! bought Konfabulator, and made it
available to the public for free. I immediately downloaded it and have since
been awash in widget goodness.
I’ve got to say, I think the Yahoo! vs. Google competition
has been great for consumers. The quality of the free software and Web services
that have been made available in the last year is astounding. We get Web e-mail
with massive storage, fantastic photo organizing software and sharing services,
and easy-to-use blogging tools, among others. I wonder if Google will respond
to Yahoo’s most recent purchase, and if so, how?
