OK, so maybe that’s the most obvious headline I could have picked. Regardless, there has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about inept, inconsiderate, and just plain bad PR pitches to bloggers. Anil Dash seems to have sparked the firestorm, but he offered some helpful tips for those "misguided" PR folks who are giving the rest of us a bad name. Russell Beattie pulls no punches on the topic in a post entitled, "PR People are Morons." I would beg to differ, but perhaps if I weren’t professionally involved in public relations and had to put up with these pitches, I’d be a little bitter, too.
PR Opinions has numerous examples of bloggers who are fed up with misguided PR efforts, some of which are blatantly unethical.
When pitching to the media, I always try to be as considerate as I can; I ask the reporter if he or she has time to hear a pitch, I keep the pitch short, and I keep the pitch relevant to that reporter’s beat. This has been proper PR operating procedure for a very long time. Just because blogs are new doesn’t mean the rules should be changed.
