Jim Rome, Podcaster

I’m a fan of Jim Rome, sports radio and talk show personality. In fact, I listen to his show as often as I can. Unfortunately, I’m unable to catch it every day, and I’d need a subscription to Streamlink to listen to the episodes I miss.

Imagine my surprise when, on today’s show, Rome announced that his show will be available as a podcast in the next "couple of weeks." He explained the time-shifting and subscription aspect of podcasts, and promised more information to come.

It still amazes me that this technology has progressed so quickly. It wasn’t even one year ago when I started listening to the very first podcasts by Adam Curry. Now, Curry hosts "PodShow" on Sirius satellite radio, an AM radio station in San Francisco has switched to an all-podcast format, and even radio icons such as Rush Limbaugh are releasing FM radio shows as podcasts.

It’s mind boggling to think that this is still a niche technology- The true podcast explosion is undoubtedly on its way, as Apple bundles the ability to retrieve podcasts in its next version of iTunes and Microsoft has hinted at its own podcast utilities. It’ll be exciting to see exactly what each company has up its sleeve, and how it’s embraced by casual computer users.
